Most veterans and their loved ones are not aware of the multitude of benefits available through the Department of Veterans Affairs. In particular, for aging veterans and surviving spouses of veterans, there is a benefit that may pay up to an additional $2,019 in monthly income to subsidize medical expenses. This important benefit, which I regularly speak to my veteran clients about, is the Improved Pension 'Aid & Attendance' benefit.

This benefit is a special monthly pension which is particularly beneficial for qualifying individuals who require caregiver assistance at home or are residents of an assisted living facility, regardless of whether you suffered any service-connected injury.  It can help you pay professional care providers, and even your children, for needed at-home care. The benefit can also help you pay for assisted living or skilled nursing home care. Imagine having an additional $2,019 per month that you didn't even know existed!

It's astounding that roughly 1/3 of all seniors can qualify for up to $2,019 additional income a month through this Pension benefit under the right conditions, yet government statistics show only 5% of potentially eligible veterans are actually receiving the benefit. With applications generally requiring 6 to 9 months to be processed, it's best to make sure you're in a good position for qualification prior to submitting an application.
